Tips: How to write an effective resume

Resume tips for various professionals/functions: Accounting   Admin   Airlines   Banking   Biotechnology   Engineering   Finance   Financial Services   Fresher   HR   Insurance   IT   Logistics/SCM   Marketing   Medical   Pharma   Retail   R&D   Sales

What makes a resume effective? The effective resume is strong in content, focus, structure and design.

Content: Include all relevant details but exclude all extraneous data.

Focus: Aim everywhere and you will get nowhere. So choose carefully and focus determinedly.

Structure: Exhibit all the details of your career compactly, in logical order and with apt emphasis.

Design: The design and presentation aspects of the resume includes selection of font size, font type, paragraph style...

Your resume will be read by a real flesh and blood person like you and me; so ensure that your resume is coherent, credible, personalized and also interesting.

Purpose of the resume

The purpose of the resume is two-fold - winning the interview and helping you through the interview.

Many clients ask me if my resume would get them their dream job. My answer is always negative, because that is not the purpose of the resume.

The resume is a sales document that introduces you to your prospective employer in a manner that convinces him to have a discussion with you to consider the chances of an association. Two, the resume helps you to refer to specifics that you do not have to memorize for the interview.

After all, the interview is not an examination, but a discussion.

Target of the resume

This is the most important and difficult question you have to face before preparing your resume. The easiest answer is to just progress with your existing career track. But just ask yourself these questions before you proceed.

Why are you seeking this change now? What are those things that you have liked and disliked in your career. In what areas have you been able to excel? What have you enjoyed doing? What do you really want from your career?

When you have found these answers, try to do an extensive research on industries, organizations and roles that could employ your skill set to produce a win-win situation.

This could be fun and the discovery of new avenues might be a joy as well.

Focus of the Resume

Once you have arrived at the choice of your target profile, maintaining the focus throughout the resume is important.

If your choice is more than one industry or one function, try to evaluate your skills required for each of them. Are they the same? If not, how would the same resume justify your candidature for all of them.

Your marketing skills might not be relevant to the operations role you are applying to; so the HR Manager might not simply care for the successful branding campaigns you have steered!

Customization of the resume to portray you as the best choice for the role is as important as the selection of role itself.

You would not want to miss out on that chance just because your resume did not present yourselves appropriately!

Format of the Resume

Many of my clients wonder if my resume would comply with international standards. There are no strict rules in relation to the format of a resume unless otherwise mentioned. For example, some North American companies might ask for a 1-page resume or some Middle Eastern companies might insist on including your picture.

The best format for your resume is the one that captures all important information regarding your candidature and presents it attractively. By attractively, I mean the selection of font size, font type, paragraph style etc. to present information clearly. Using headers and bullets will help form a clear and readable structure.

Exhibit all the details of your career compactly, in logical order and with apt emphasis. The document should be presented unambiguously and with utmost clarity. Remember we are fighting the odd statistics of our resume grabbing attention in 10 seconds or lesser and escaping the fate of the other 90% resumes that made to the trash!

Length of the Resume

There are not standard rules regarding the length of the resume, unless otherwise mentioned. Most US companies and many academic admissions insist on a 1-page resume.

It is the choice of your role and the content that goes into the resume that decides the length. You might come across the resume of a two decade experienced professional's resume that might be shorter than another with a decade of work experience. The former might have worked only for a single company while the latter has five different assignments to talk about.

All said and done, success is when the resume wins us the interview. My advice - keep it short - let it be the summary of your life and not a biography.

Content of the Resume

Include all relevant details but exclude all extraneous data - that's the thumb rule.

If you feel that a specific activity of your initiative has yielded expected results but have not been appreciated by he management - do not refrain from including the information in the resume. This might talk about certain skills of yours which cannot be substantiated in other ways.

Do not forget to mention the basics - justification of your candidature - describe your career and skills rightly.

If you have doubtful information, do not include them. Your technical profile would look definitely better with your expert areas than the skills you are not sure of. Your sole representative and advocate is the resume. So, make your communication concise, precise and effective.
